"The part we didn't pay to print became the best feature on our packaging."

The story between PHiSTiK and Dylign

Two Windows That Cost Nothing

The Brand

Serdar Sinaci grew up in Antep, Turkey, picking pistachios from his family's groves. Antep pistachios have a deeper aroma, a richer flavor, and a vivid green color that other origins do not match, and he started PHiSTiK to bring them to American shelves in their pure form: raw kernels and roasted shell-on, with as little done to them as possible.

The brand's standards set the packaging brief. The pouch had to hold itself up on a shelf rather than slump like a standard bag, which meant a flat-bottom structure: the box-like format that stands rigid and upright in a specialty grocery aisle.

The Challenge

A flat-bottom pouch has five printable surfaces: front panel, back panel, bottom gusset, and two side gussets. Printing all five carries an upfront tooling cost that lands before a single pouch exists, and for a brand at launch stage that cost is the whole decision. The usual advice is to drop to a basic stand-up pouch and give up the retail presentation the brand wanted.

The Solution

Instead of changing the pouch structure, we redesigned the print layout—printing only the front, back and bottom panels while leaving the side gussets unprinted. This reduced upfront production costs by 20%–30% and kept the custom flat-bottom pouch within budget.

Because the film was clear, the unprinted gussets also became two full-height product windows without requiring die-cut window tooling. We selected a high-barrier film to meet the product’s protection and shelf-life needs.

For the second-generation pouch, we moved the tear notch away from the zipper seal and recalibrated its depth. This created a straighter opening while keeping the resealable zipper intact.

The Result

A premium flat-bottom pouch that stands upright on shelf, shows the product through both sides without a single dollar of window tooling, and opens cleanly the first time without losing its reseal.

For a brand built on the color and quality of a single-origin nut, those two clear panels do more work than the print they replaced. PHiSTiK got the shelf presence it came for, on a budget that had said no to it.

"I grew up around these pistachios. Now people can see why."

Printed Surfaces

Front, back and bottom printed, both side gussets left bare, taking 20% to 30% out of upfront cost

Clear Windows at Zero Tooling Cost

Unprinted film is clear film, so the panels off the budget became viewing windows on both sides
